Free For All Tuesday No 187

Tuesdays are your chance to ask any Filofax related questions you might have.

Even if it is not Tuesday, you can still post your questions here, just pick the most recent FFAT or FFAF.

So fire away and we will collectively try to answer your questions or offer opinions.

  1. I know lots of people who use their binder (Filofax or other brand) as their only book, one book for everything, but I'm interested in how people use their filofax with other notebooks, journals etc- does each one have a distinct use?

    1. I use multiple Filofaxes, with one main 4CLF for general non-work purposes. The others each have distinct uses, e.g. 3CL for work reference leaves, large ring Winchester for blank notepaper, another medium sized Sandhurst for home reference and filing, etc.

    2. I use a generic personal-size binder for all my planning, tasks, contacts, lists (both work and home). I have an A5 Filofax Flex that I use for writing down anything I want to look up online later, movies to see someday, and occasionally for work notes. I have another personal-sized binder for keeping track of book series, books to track down at various libraries, and book recommendations; these are roughly in A-Z order. I have a bound book for a personal journal. Then I have my favorite extra notebook (A5 equivalent) used for keeping track of my crafting/sewing projects. It's nothing fancy, but I've thought of asking to do a guest post on it. I was greatly inspired to set it up after reading Helen's guest post on her quilt projects binder.

If you are wondering about people using multiple binders at the same time, well, I have my main planner and Flex with me most of the time but they're not really used in conjunction with each other.

    3. Just now I'm trying a lighter setup using a Davinci compact binder with 15mm rings. General notes (book notes, quotes, some lists) now go in a Smythson Panama notebook that I'm using as a sort of Commonplace Book. I keep a separate A5 Executive Filofax at work, and journal in an A5 Midori datebook.

    4. I have several books (Filos and notebooks) going at once, and they each have their own use. It confuses me if they overlap too much. However, some of the information overlaps, mainly lists. So in my household binder, say, I have a list of projects to be done around the house. When I have time, I move one of them to my personal binder because it's considered "active." The project notes in my household binder gets a check mark next to it so that I know it's also in my personal binder. Once the project is complete, it gets crossed out in both places. I need the separation though so that I don't have to see items until I'm ready because otherwise it's too overhwleming to me.

  2. Why do some companies that sell inserts use such thin paper and regularly offer discount codes? Is it just about the cost? So they don't use better paper and increase the price but still offer the code because sales will decrease. I cannot use Franklin Covey month on two pages insert in my compact binder because the paper is too thick and takes up too much space.

    1. Thin paper doesn't have to be bad paper. The Davinci Raymay inserts are excellent quality, are the only paper I know of which will take any of my fountain pens with no bleed-through and virtually no show-through, and are about one half the weight (my estimate) of Filofax Cotton Cream. The only thing I wouldn't recommend is putting them through a printer!

On the subject of binder capacity, obviously there is an empirical connection between this and paper weight. It will always be the case that the smaller the chosen ring size, the fewer sheers those rings will hold. Using Davinci paper will increase the capacity in terms of number of sheets.

    2. Hi David. Thin paper doesn't have to be bad paper as you said. I bought the pack of lined Davinci paper after you and others suggested it. It will be a very nice space saver in my binder. I have a lot of Filofax lined paper to use too. I will look at the undated month calendar as an option. I have removed some unnecessary items like the zipper pouch and added laminated month tabs with clear address labels to my current month calendar. You and many others have some really good suggestions on tips and products. I appreciate that and your reply to my comment.

  3. I have also asked this on the Philofaxy fans Facebook page, and Steve suggested posting it here too, so here goes. I'd like tto know what size and brand of corner page rounder folks use for an A5 and where they purchased the corner rounder from. Also, I am currently using a Month on 2 pages to track my job searches and deadlines. However when I do land that job, I am wondering if I will need a monthly page as well as my weekly WO2P. Or are the monthly pages used for something other than a catch all diary? Do folks just use an either weekly or monthly and not both. Any thoughts on this gratefully received. Thanks in advance TIA. xxxx

    1. I have two corner rounders: a plier-style Fiskars that will do about 5-6 pages at a time, and a large commercial one that my co-admins in the Filofax & Pens For Sale site bought me that will do hundreds of pages at a time - something I can only justify taking out occasionally. The more practical Fiskars one was purchased at Michaels, a crafting store chain.
